Home security tips for apartment dwellers<

Protecting apartments is quite a lot different from securing conventional houses, and for the same reasons, apartment-dwellers are much more likely to be the victims of a break-in than homeowners.

However, regardless of the size of your apartment building or complex, there are lots of security measures that homeowners can implement to ensure an outstanding security.

Veegaland Homes, one of the most trusted builders in Kerala have put together some home security tips that can be really helpful for apartment dwellers, and let’s have a look at them:

1. Install a security system

Most of the modern apartments come with a pre-installed security system and if that’s not the case with your apartment, we recommend that you have one installed for your apartment.

There are many companies offering various models of up-to-date security systems from different budgets and needs, and they are easy to install and also flexible to re-install in case you shift or relocate.

As they are Wi-Fi enabled, modern security devices and cameras can be controlled right from your smartphone, making them a lot more convenient and secure.

2. Get a door security bar or jammer

The primary form of protection from home break-ins is to secure the entrance doors of your apartment. Even if your apartment has 24/7 security and camera surveillance, a strong and secure door is a must and you shouldn’t compromise on its quality.

Door jammers, which are easy to be installed and removed without any damages to the doors are a great security measure for apartments. Resistant to lock bumping and picking, they are perfect as an added protection for your doors.

Most of the door jammers available today are portable as well, which makes it convenient for you to take them with your when you travel.

3. Upgrade your door locks

If the locks of your doors aren’t safe and secure enough, there’s no point in upgrading the door and it’s important for them to feel safe than looking good. Double-cylinder deadbolt or mortise locks are great options and you can also go for technologically advanced options such as installing a digital or smart lock.

Advanced lock systems even allow remote entry, wherein you can open the door using your smartphone and there are locks that can also be integrated with home devices like Alexa, which takes things to the next level.

4. Consider security cameras

Contrary to the popular belief, security cameras aren’t exactly a component of a whole security system and there are plenty of standalone cameras in different price ranges that can be a significant security feature for your apartment.

Modern security cameras and smart video doorbells also have different features such as motion sensors, motion detection, night vision, and two-way talk which makes security a lot more convenient and strong.

5. Improve outdoor lighting

Turning on the outdoor lighting of your apartment and keeping it well-lit is a simple and effective way to keep the potential intruders away.

With keeping the lights on all the time causing wastage of energy while you are away, there are different features available these days such as motion activation and smart bulbs which offer security and also help you contribute to energy conservation.

6. Secure the windows

Along with doors, windows are another common entry point used by burglars and should be therefore be taken care of to closed and locked, whenever you aren’t at the home or are engaged in activities that take your complete attention.

Placing strong locks on any apartment windows on the ground floor and windows that are accessible from the outside is essential to secure your home.

7. Invest in a safe

Investing in a safe or safety deposit at your nearest/local bank or getting a tough and sturdy home safe to store precious jewelry and important documents can offer additional security and peace of mind.

8. Buddy system

If you love making new friends and looking out for each other, you can try befriending someone living in the same apartment complex who can look out to your apartment when you are out of town and vice-versa.

Having a friend or relative who lives nearby who can come to check up on the apartment in your absence will also be an option.
