But the lack of open land and proper maintenance system has many left with opting-out from the initial enthusiasm. But with the Microgreen farming method, an entire family can provide themselves with products of their liking.

This method of farming which occupies minimum space is becoming a trend among the public in Kochi and Kerala in general. Most of the 2 and 3 BHK apartments in Kochi provide balcony space for the respective households, this way the family tends to use this provided space for cultivation. And the best way to cultivate is the Microgreen farming technique.

Considered as an effective way of cultivating vegetables the Microgreen farming is also the most prominent process. The consumables produced have high yielding and fertile value. Leafy vegetables are preferred for farming on a wide scale and it results in producing vegetables with more nutrient values than the one which we buy from the market. In this method, after 15 days from the sprouting stage, the vegetable grows to become usable. So here it only requires a minimum amount of time. It even tastes better than bought vegetables.

  • Mustard seeds, rice grains, and corn can also be cultivated through the terrace garden method or hanging garden, as one, proceeds further
  • The place chosen must have: air-circulation, maximum sunlight and opt for a place which is not very wet or filled with water.
  • Requires a container with tiny holes under it. Fill half of the tray or container with farming-friendly soil and left out coconut husk.
  • If you don’t consider trying out a container with enough pores, you can always go for dry farming, but remember to spray some water into the soil. Helps to maintain the right amount of humidity
  •  You can either go for hanging garden technique or the classic terrace garden method
  •  Before sowing the seeds, it is important to dip the seeds in water for about 10-12 hours prior
  • Most of the Microgreen vegetables grow for 2 weeks and we can easily use afterward
  • This way, from one container/tray alone, a family can cultivate up to 24 Microgreen vegetables in a year.

We should be promoting this method of farming because it is important for the sustainability of humans. We can grow and consume our own goods, keeping up with the need of our times. As in when we are going through a struggling stage across the world due to the Coronavirus pandemic, we ought to consider adapting to this style of agrarian methods. By involving kids in this process, we can teach them the value of self-sustainability for the future.
